Japanese film "Looking for Anne" won the top prizes Friday at the Asian Festival of First Films in Singapore. The festival (Nov 29 - Dec 3) also awarded four honors to "For Real" and its Indian-born, director-producer-screenwriter Sona Jain.
The story of a Japanese girl on a quest to find the truth behind "Anne of Green Gables," "Looking for Anne" won prizes as best film and as best director for Takao Miyahira.
The only English-language picture in the competition and a story of a small girl who fantasizes that her mother is an alien, "For Real," enjoyed wins for Zoya S. Hasan and Sriharsh Sharma Churai as best actor and best actress respectively and for Jain as best producer. Jain, backed by Ira Deutschmann's New York-based Emerging Pictures, also shared the screenwriting prize with Avantika Hari and Vivek Agrawal writers of "Land Gold Woman."
The festival, run by Sanjoy Roy, received 700 submissions and selected 22 feature and documentary films. The prizes were picked by a jury that included Australian director Ana Kokkinos, U.S. producer Chris Lee and 2007 AFFF best director, Kabir Khan from India.
