TVB’s 45th anniversary celebration

If we were asked to name the TVB program that has garnered the most ‘feedback’ in HK recently, that ‘title’ would go to the interview show Telling Maria (最佳男主角) hosted by [veteran reporter and entertainment news host] Luisa Maria Leitao (黎芷珊). In the program, Maria sits down with some of the HK film industry’s most popular Best Actor winners from the past few decades and chats with them about career, life, and much more – having so many ‘big names’ from the industry reveal intimate details about themselves, of course it’s no surprise that the program was able to ‘attract’ so many viewers. However, let’s not forget the ‘other’ Best Actors out there – the ones from the TV world who have a certain ‘attractiveness’ of their own that is equally appealing to audiences!

With this year being TVB’s 45th anniversary celebration, let us take a look back at TVB’s Best Actor winners from the past 15 years (starting with the 30th anniversary celebration in 1997) and reminisce about their careers as well as ‘classic’ performances.

Starting in 1997, TVB added an awards element to their annual TVB Anniversary Gala (萬千星輝賀台慶) event. In 2006, the awards portion was ‘broken off’ into its own independent program -- the TVB Anniversary Awards show (萬千星輝頒獎典禮) – and over the years, it has become one of the station’s most highly anticipated events. Two of the event’s ‘top honors’ -- TV King (Best Actor) and TV Queen (Best Actress) – are awards that the station’s many actors and actresses ‘battle’ over every year.

In the 15 years that TVB’s Anniversary Awards has been in existence, a total of 9 TV Kings (Best Actors) have been crowned. Amongst them, actor Gallen Lo (羅嘉良) tops the list as the ‘TV King of Kings’, as he has won the coveted award 3 times (a record that has yet to be broken); close behind him are 4 actors who have each won the award twice: Roger Kwok (郭晉安), Wayne Lai (黎耀祥), Kevin Cheng (鄭嘉穎), and Louis Koo (古天樂). Rounding out the rest of the TV King winners list are Bobby Au Yeung (歐陽震華), Moses Chan (陳豪), Bowie Lam (林保怡), and Ha Yu (夏雨).

Kevin Cheng and Karen Mok enter the music industry

Kevin Cheng and Karen Mok attended an event yesterday to support the Charles K Kao Foundation for Alzheimer's Disease. It turns out that Kevin and Karen both entered the music industry back in 1993. They took the opportunity to catch up with each other at the event. Karen says, "We haven't seen each others in ages. We entered the music industry during a year when there were so many newcomers. Next year will be our 20th year in the business. I'm planning to hold a concert tour to celebrate. I'll definitely have a stop in Hong Kong, but maybe not at the Coliseum. I hope to invite singers from my year as special guests." Karen quickly turns to Kevin to extend an invitation to him. Kevin nods to accept and hopes he has time to attend. "Actually I'm preparing to release an album to celebrate my 20th year in the business. However, I've been too busy lately that I've only had time to record four songs. Before I start filming for my new series next month, I will record two more songs. I hope to release my album before autumn of next year."

There are rumours that Kevin's appearance fees have soared from 100K to 180K. He avoided talking about the numbers, "I've never paid attention to the amount. If there's work to be done, then I will do it. I don't worry about it too much. I don't need a luxury apartment. Any type of investments I leave to my mother and older sister." Kevin says that he will be flying all over during the Christmas holidays. Tonight he will appear at the TVB Anniversary Awards. However, he has no time to attend his old flame Linda Wong's concert, but will send flowers to wish her luck.

Big Bang recently held concerts in the UK

Big Bang recently held concerts in the UK successfully.

They held concerts at the London Wembley Arena on December 14 and 15 as part of their world tour titled, Alive Galaxy Tour 2012, attracting 24,000 people in total.

Big Bang were the first Korean singing group to hold concerts at the concert hall, where such world-famous musicians as The Beatles, ABBA, and Beyonce have held their concerts.

Big Bang were originally planning to hold just one concert on December 15. However, one more concert was added on December 14 at the request of many fans in the country. Tickets for the December 14 concert were also quickly sold out.

Big Bang visited the UK for the first time last year when they received the Worldwide Act Award at the 2011 MTV Europe Music Awards, held in Northern Ireland. Within a year, they proved their increased popularity in the country by holding concerts in the London Wembley Arena.

Starting in Seoul in March last year, Big Bang have toured such Asian countries as Japan, China, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, and Indonesia, and such American and European countries as the U.S., Peru, and the UK. The number of concerts and the scale of the tour are the biggest among those of all Korean singers or singing groups.

Big Bang will hold more concerts at the Fukuoka Dome in Japan on December 22, at the Kyocera Dome in Japan on January 12 and 13, and at the Gymnastics Stadium in the Olympic Park in Korea from January 25 to 27.

TVB Anniversary Awards, Witness Insecurity

There are only two days left before the TVB Anniversary Awards, Witness Insecurity starring Bosco Wong and Linda Chung is still the top rated series of 2012 to date, averaging 31.65 points. TVB anniversary series Silver Spoon, Sterling Shackles and The Confidant tried to boost the ratings by hosting an event for the cast to watch the finale with the audience. To maintain the popularity, Bosco comes back to life in the specially recorded theatrical version of Linda's song The Most Blissful Thing (最幸福的事).

Regarding the special theatrical version of the song, Bosco's role "Hui Sir" comes back to life, Bosco admitted: "Linda asked for my help because the two roles Kiu Chi Lam and Hui Sir has left deep impressions on the audience, so we recorded a special version!" Linda was asked if this version is used to help get more votes, she frankly expressed the audience knows in their heart, there is no need for them to purposely ask audience to vote for them!

Witness Insecurity currently holds the title of the top rated series of 2012, but Bosco and Linda expressed they don't mind other series surpassing them. Bosco frankly said: "The rankings are not important, the most important is TVB series get good response and ratings. That would be the best for all of us! We don't have to be the top rated of the year." Linda agreed: "We are still the top rated up until now, I'm pleased with this result. Even if we get surpassed and end up in second place, I'll still be just as happy!"

Also, last night Bosco and Niki Chow were shooting the ending scene for A Change of Heart. The scene was about the couple enjoying a romantic night together watching fireflies. Before filming, Bosco just had a lunchbox to eat, he said he hasn't had time to celebrate his birthday because he is also working on the Chinese New Year film and immediately following, there are a lot of Christmas jobs. He said: "I didn't think I'll have to spend my birthday in the middle of nowhere. Yesterday the crew did a quick celebration with me, sang me the birthday song and gave me a Ma Lai Go cake. I even treated everyone for drinks, no problem! As long as we're all happy." Niki was asked if she got a birthday gift for her partner? She said: "After we complete this series, I'll treat them all dinner, no problem! We had a pleasant collaboration, can think of it as an end of filming dinner or a dinner to make up for his birthday. (You treat the dinner?) No problem." Niki expressed she wishes Bosco's career goes smoothly. When asked if she'll introduce him to a new girlfriend? She said: "I can't even help myself, how can I look after others? We are all single, and understand its the time to work hard on our careers."

TVB series Silver Spoon, Sterling Shackle

Last night Tavia Yeung, Damien Lau, Kenneth Ma, Sire Ma and the rest of the cast of TVB series Silver Spoon, Sterling Shackle watched the finale with the audience. During the finale, there were a lot of flashback scenes, which was heavily criticized by Netizens that the story dragged on for too long. The men in the series got on their knees a total of 7 times in front of the women, Netizens said they looked like "the great classic of tragic men". However, the cast watching the finale including Sire Ma, Jessie Shum, Rebecca Zhu and Elena Kong were all tearing up and had to use tissues too.

Damian expressed he's ready to lose the TV King award, but will vote for Kenneth Ma and Tavia Yeung. When Tavia heard this, she said confidently: "I'm his wife! He has to vote for me! I hope the finale tonight gets high ratings, so we could find time to celebrate together. Also, I haven't celebrated after coming back from Malaysia. (Take the TVB award too and then celebrate altogether?) Let's just eat first, perhaps I'll get celebrate again! (Already celebrated with Him Law?) Happiness does not just have to be two people, nor is the achievements just on the award winner. There are also a large group of staff behind the scenes." Kenneth praised Damian's acting as "God level" and expressed the award is not important, he is grateful for all the advice Damian gave him. He smiled and said the award ceremony is like a big party to him.

TV King, TV Queen and Best Series

[Mingpao Weekly] continues their 'I Vote the TV King and Queen 2012' poll into the third day. On the first day, there were over 33,000 votes, and up until last night at 9pm, a total of 160,556 people voted for TV King, TV Queen and Best Series.

The updated results are as follows:

TV King:
01. Raymond Lam (36%)
02. Moses Chan (25%)
03. Kenneth Ma (13%)

TV Queen:
01. Charmaine Sheh (31%)
02. Fala Chen (24%)
03. Tavia Yeung (16%)
04. Kate Tsui (15%)

Best Series:
01. Highs and Lows (37%)
02. When Heaven Burns (31%)
03. The Hippocratic Crush (15%)

Raymond Lam openly said he hopes to take the TV King seat. Before the voting ends, he rushes back to HK to collect final votes. Yesterday he frankly said: "I've been nominated several times in my 10 years in the industry, this year I really want to get the award once." He feels the breakthrough this time was something that was hard to believe for him. As for some actors complaining in the competition for awards, they can't compare to idol actors. Raymond said: "Artists get votes because their performance attracted attention and recognition. It is not about the different age groups, it is about what the audience likes, everyone has a chance." Raymond sees Astro's TV King Kenneth Ma as his greatest opponent, so he will copy Kate Tsui's tactic and actively promote and does not hope to lose a single vote. "I don't know how to vote yet, I will learn as soon as possible and collect other people's ID cards. I will vote for myself and my partner Kate Tsui."

[The Sun] As for Fala Chen's ugly girl Chung Mo Yim role in Queens of Diamonds and Hearts got good response, Fala happily said: "It's already really good to gain recognition. Of course I hope to get the [award]! When I was shooting Queens, it was quite difficult, every artist put in a lot of effort. But as far as voting, I cannot control. (Work harder in promotions to get more votes?) Not necessary, most important is entertaining the audience. I'm laid back every year. (Tell fans to help you get more votes?) They are pretty low-key too."

55th Asia-Pacific Film Festival 2012

The 55th Asia-Pacific Film Festival 2012 was held in Macau last night. There were a total of 12 awards presented. Flipino actor Eddie Garcia and Taiwanese actress Gwei Lun-Mei were crowned Film King and Queen. HK veteran actor Lo Hoi Pang and Japanese actress Makiko Watanabe won Best Supporting Actor and Actress. TVB was fully supportive at the award show, their artists JJ Jia, Eliza Sam (Heung Heung), Kate Tsui and Wilson Chin kicked off the awards ceremony with singing and dancing. Other guests include Kenneth Ma, Bosco Wong and Michael Tse.

Heung Heung appeared wearing her DIY red dress, she disclosed the fabric and thread she used to sew her dress were purchased from Sham Shui Po, she said: "I only spent HK$250, but that doesn't include the sewing machine. (Make dresses for other FaDans too?) I have that idea too. I've made a few evening dresses since coming back to HK." When Kate walked down the red carpet, she kept mingling with her dress as she walked, she said: "The dress is too heavy. Also, I've been nervous about the TVB awards lately, so I've some weight and only can clamp onto my dress as I walk. I'm afraid the dress will get out of place!"

TVB new series Missing You

Linda Chung, Lin Xiawei and Jason Chan appeared at a shopping mall to promote for TVB new series Missing You. Recently a behind-the-scenes photo of Linda while she was shooting a commercial circulated online. In the photo, she was seen in a short tank top, revealing her career line. Netizens were surprised to see the conservative goddess turn into someone with such excellent body figure. Linda laughed: "I don't mind looking sexy. If there are clients that want me to dress sexily to shoot a commercial, I don't mind. As my mother says, when there is something to show while you're young, why not show it?" She said sexiness is about the feelings, as long as its healthy and no exposure. "Sexy happy price would be good, I don't want to frighten the clients." A recent report publicized TVB artists' salaries? Linda said: "The report said my income dropped, that is wrong. This year I earned a lot more than previous years. Actually my income increased, it has never dropped. I don't want clients to misunderstand."

When speaking of the TV Queen battle, Linda is feeling normal about it, she said: "As Wayne Lai said, asking voters for support does not necessarily mean people will vote for you. I'm already happy to be nominated. I saw I had good results on other website polls and gained a lot of love from audience and that is already comforting to me."

Lin Xiawei said she voted for her cousin Raymond Lam for TV King, "I watched his Highs and Lows. His role was very different from his previous roles. TV Queen, I voted for Kate Tsui because her drug queen role was a challenge."

Chinese Music Awards 2012

A few days ago, Kary Ng was at the radio station for an interview. When speaking of her bitter debut, she expressed she was unhappy when people said her looks can't compare to Stephy Tang and Theresa Fu. She said: "Back when we were still in Cookies, one time we were taking a large group picture and I got the middle spot, but the reporters told me to stand in the back row. Although I was unhappy, I wasn't upset and could only take it in. I thought to myself, I'm just a singer, why am I getting compared." Also, since Wilfred Lau announced he's dating Joey Yung, it was the first time Wilfred and Denise Ho appeared on the same stage, but the two were on stage at different times. Denise won 4 big awards.

Also, he had never cared too much about the TVB anniversary awards, "If you ask me, which award I would be happier with, the acting or commercial award? I think getting the commercial award makes me happier because you can't just get this award that easily. (Because the value is more attractive?) Thank you! I'm very happy." Comrades: Almost A Love Story

Hong Kong stars Leon Lai and Maggie Cheung were recently spotted going on dates in both Hong Kong and China. Forty-sex-year-old Leon, who divorced from actress Gaile Lok in October, met Maggie, who has separated from her architect boyfriend, at a charity event.

Although Maggie has expressed a keen interest in music in recent years, she is currently playing 'for fun' and has no real plans on releasing an album.

It has been said that Leon used music as an excuse to ask the 48-year-old out on several occasions to discuss album plans. The two are reportedly getting along very well.
Sources revealed that the singer-actor aims to fulfill Maggie's dream by offering
personal singing lessons, finding professional studios for song recording, and even offering to put the songs up on his own music company A-Music's website for download.

Leon apparently won Maggie over after he specially travelled to Shanghai while the actress was working in the Chinese city.

The pair was first romantically linked after working together on the classic movie Comrades: Almost A Love Story in 1996, but both of them denied the rumours at the time and subsequently found their respective ex-partners.

Raymond's 33rd birthday

Raymond Lam made a special trip back to Hong Kong to hold an autograph session for his latest album Self-Portrait and attracted over a 100 fans to support him at the mall. Raymond played games with the fans and got the fan girls screaming in excitement.

Raymond's 33rd birthday was on December 8th. He reveals he spent his birthday filming in Hengdian. He said: "At the time, I was in the middle of filming and suddenly everyone from the crew surrounded me. They started dancing and pushed out a birthday cake to celebrate with me. Although I was a little frightened, but I had a good time." When asked if his birthday wish is to become TV King? He expressed: "That is one of my wishes, every year people say I'm the hot favorite, but actually I'm already happy to be nominated."

When Raymond completed the autograph session, he went back to Mainland to continue shooting, but he made it clear that he will definitely be back in HK to attend the TVB anniversary awards, he said: "After all, this is an annual large scale event. Also, even if I don't get any awards, I will still rush back to thank everyone who voted for me." When asked if he'll copy Wayne Lai and hand out supermarket coupons to get more people to vote for him? He joked: "Well then I'll give out the watches and jewelry from my sponsor."

Ten Best Dressed Personalities Awards

I usually shop online for clothes and high heels because you can shop anytime online, no fear of the store closing." It turns out Myolie likes to buy high heels the most, she has over 100 pairs of heels at home and hopes her future daughter will have the same shoe size as her, so she can pass them down to her! When speaking of Myolie's new home, she expressed she has already gotten used to living with her sister, she said: "I feel blessed because this is a home sweet home I personally created, but I'm not ready to bring a man in to live with me."

Daniel expressed his younger brother Mark Chan brought his model wife and three month old nephew to the award show to witness him getting this fashion award for the first time. Daniel carried his nephew and showed everyone how much he loved him. When asked when he'll be starting a family? Tung Wah Charity Show 2012

TVB held the annual Tung Wah Charity Show 2012 and successfully raised a total of $90,388,888. Although this year the show had a dim 'star light' and the show only relied on 'heavy flavored' performances, the funds raised still broke last year's record of $87,926,516. The donors Carmen and Kathy especially performed a "Cat Duet" on stage, which set off the climax of the show and raised $2 million. Carmen and Kathy were both disguised as black and white cats respectively and performed Opera in their cat voices accompanied with piano music in the background. Carmen and Kathy were 'meowing' for more than 3 minutes, stunning the entire studio audience.

Nancy Sit had always been the "Ka Lai Star" (卡拉之星) at the Tung Wah charity shows and usually gets the most donations, but last night she announced this would be her final year because the performance occurs too late in the night, leaving her in exhaustion and she has pain in her legs. In the future years, she will only participate in the show as the MC or in other performances. When asked if its going to be a disappointment without her as the "Ka Lai Star"? She said: "Nope! There will be new talents and this year, I especially asked Bob Lam to help us out." Although this is Nancy's final "Ka Lai Star" performance, she still put in a lot of effort into learning the Gangnam Style lyrics and dance routine. When she performed the Gangnam Style horse-riding dance, her son's boss donated $1 million to support her. She got the studio audience really high as she sang and dance, and successfully raised $330,000 for her whole performance. After the show ended, she agreed to do the dance three more times as requested by the audience.

Bob Lam and Penny Chan were disguised as Lee Heung Kam and Tam Bing for their outstanding duet "You Come Back" (你回來吧); they successfully pulled in another $31,800 of donations. Bob, disguised as Lee Heung Kam did not only slap Penny's pat pat out of the blue, but also suddenly kissed him on the lips. The two expressed they did rehearse that part prior to the show, but asked if they're worried that the 'heavy flavored' performance may get complaints? Bob said: "Perhaps 'Ka Lai Star' will get the first complaint in history. We just hope audience enjoy watching and don't complain." Nancy especially named Bob to take over as the "Ka Lai Star"? Bob expressed he is very grateful of Nancy's continuous care for him.

TVB drama Silver Spoon, Sterling Shackles

TVB young FaDan Sire Ma plays Damian Lau's daughter in the current TVB drama Silver Spoon, Sterling Shackles. She portrays the daughter of a wealthy man, but has no right or freedom in choosing a spouse, her parents decides everything for her. For this series, Sire traveled with the crew to Shanghai, where they were able to really concentrate on shooting the series because there were no other jobs to distract them. Sire was able to really get into character, in one emotional scene about Sire crying to her father, Damian, her tears naturally came running down. She said: "Actually that scene didn't have much dialogue. I asked Dad, do you know there are a lot of unhappy people in this family? Then I start crying. Damian said he rarely tears up when he watches playbacks of his own scenes. He was re-watching this scene, and had teary eyes. He said my performance was so touching, and I'm happy to have his compliment!"

She and the other cast developed a very good relationship because they were filming for nearly half a year together. They often group chat on WhatsApp. Shooting in Shanghai this time around, she was able to experience how enthusiastic Mainland fans are. The fans would stand in front of the hotel waiting for their idols practically every day. They bring breakfast and late night snacks for their idols and sometimes even daily necessities.

Sire hopes she'll have the opportunity to go to Mainland more often because there is heavy historical feel there, which helps artists get into character easily. As to the series said to leave "heavy flavors"? She believes people shouldn't place all the attention on any one particular scene, "It's just like appreciating artwork, shouldn't be using the erotic view to see it."

'The Voice' singer Adrian Chau ('Dai Ma', Older Twin) plays the HK police officer in a green uniform in SSSS. His character lives a life of principles, but eventually develops a relationship with wealthy girl "Chung Ho Yin" (Sire Ma). Adrian said the character is very "hot" and the role with the most screen time since he debut. However, when he first looked at the script, he had a headache: "This role has so many turning points, I had to really put in a lot of effort into analyzing how I should portray him. My seniors Damian Lau, Elena Kong, Ron Ng and Kenneth Ma were very willing to teach me. They were so detailed, they even gave me advice on body language, which helped me see the light!"

He expressed he spent a long period of time filming with all his seniors and thought of himself like a 'sponge', constantly absorbing experience. His younger twin brother 'Sai Ma', Daniel Chau, greatly envied him: "The more I listened, the more I said 'amazing'! I really envy my brother for getting a role with such heavy screen time. He even got to film in Shanghai! I hope to be part of a touching love story too, hope I'll get this opportunity!"
